Summary of action points from final discussion of choanoflagellate workshop June 14, 2009
Outreach: Mark will help upload files to wiki, Nicole will organize citations, Paddy will help w/EOL, Barry will provide citations in Excel file, species names in Excel file, and include glossary in book, Mark suggests videotaping protocols to put on web
Choanobase: further discussion to include Allan, Michael, Jody, Pad, Steve, and Dan
Immortalizing data: approach journal about setting aside an issue for choanoflagellates, need commitments from the community that they will contribute to the issue, Barry plans to write taxonomy paper by then, Nicole will take lead on contacting journals
How can we help each other?: pre-submission review by community members of papers and grants (but be careful about creating conflicts of interest), communicate with editors about the choanoflagellate community (Nicole)
Planning 3rd workshop: tentative dates between June 11-19, consider European site (e.g. Barcelona) to include more people, longer meeting OK to allow more people to speak, general desire to include workshops on protocols, David Julian agrees to do cell death workshop
Improving experimental tractability of choanos:
- balance need to develop critical mass around "model" choanoflagellates with desire to investigate the biodiversity and ecological relevance of choanoflagellates
- strain collection needed with stations in US and Europe, encourage labs to try freezing their strains
- genetic manipulation of choanoflagellates: further discussion to include Alan, Mark, Hartmut, Michael, Dirk, Pawel, Richard, David, Julian, King lab
