Culture of Salpingoeca urceolata after 1 week of treatment with 100 μg/ml ampicillin in sterile artificial sea water with 1 rice grain. Image at 630x phase. Choanoflagellates are visible, but much larger strange spheres are also present. Cultures also displaying sphere-like morphology upon treatment with ampicillin: Codosiga gracilis, Stephanoeca diplocostata, Diaphanoeca grandis. Size of sphere differs among species: Codosiga gracilis are the smallest and Diaphanoeca grandis the largest. Posted by Daniel Richter, June 12 2009.
Object observed in a culture of Diaphanoeca grandis in artificial seawater. Image at x100 bright field. This is believed to be bacteria growing on a salt crystal formed after autoclaving of the artificial seawater. Image posted by Alan Marron 8th July 2009.
Diaphanoeca grandis in a culture of artificial seawater photographed at x40 under bright field. This image possible shows the cell during division, before the daughter cell is ejected from the mother lorica. Image posted by Alan Marron 13th July 2009.
